Jack
« on: January 01, 2009, 07:19:39 am »

Name: Jack Barimen (formerly Jack Ketch)

System: Urban Arcana
Age: Physically about 25 (he considers his birthday to be 9/18/1988).  In reality, he has lived several thousand years, but has only been human since 2007.
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Height: 5'10” (he appears taller when he's wearing his boots)
Build: Jack's build is becoming bulkier with muscle, especially in the upper body.
Hair/skin/etc: Jack has long black hair which he sometimes wears tied back in a pony tail. Currently, it is shaved off on the sides.  If his hair wasn't so long, he could put it up in a mohawk. His skin is fairly pale, but improves in color in the summer months.  Jack has several tattoos and piercings.

Eyes: Dark gray.  It’s difficult to tell the pupils apart from the iris.

Wings: Jack has a pair of black-feathered wings.  They are very large, about a 20 foot wingspan in order to be able to carry his weight.

Clothing: Jack is fond of t-shirts, but will wear whatever feels comfortable.  He prefers jeans, but will put on slacks and nicer dress shirts for a special occasion.  He always wears tall black Doc Martens boots.  Usually he also wears a leather jacket and has a pair of black wrist cuffs (that are really gloves, see below).  Often he'll wear only a wife beater under his jacket if he knows he's going to want to use his wings.

Accessories:
  • Jewelry: Jack has a great love for gold and will wear it whenever possible. He's particularly fond of a necklace made of gold discs, each one engraved with a different strange creature, but rarely wears it anymore.  The necklace does nothing special.

Jack is very interested in piercing and has “plugs” in each ear at a large enough diameter that he can stick his finger through his earlobes.  He also has studs over his left eyebrow, under his lip, two in his left ear, and three in his right, a tongue piercing, and a nipple piercing.

  • Surveillance Disruption Ring: He also wears a simple silver-colored ring on his right hand.  The ring contains tech that disrupts recording devices in his immediate vicinity.  It was made specifically to work on Guardian tech, and may or may not be effective on tech from other sources.  It has no effect on magical scrying.
  • Fey leather jacket: Jack's black leather jacket has red runes sewn into the sleeves.  It was made for him by Rath and has several special properties.
    • Minor damage resistance
    • Immunity to fire
    • Morphs to allow him to wear it whether he has his wings out or not.
  • Lightsuit Gloves: Jack acquired a pair of gloves from a Tron system. The gloves are able to act as a second, armored skin. They give his hands the equivalent protection of a pair of leather gauntlets. In addition, they protect his hands from his own fire powers, allowing him to create his magic fire with no risk to himself.

In their full protective configuration, the gloves cover Jack's hands entirely and reach to midway up his forearm. The material of the gloves can change, however, allowing him to wear them as short fingerless gloves. Most of the time, he wears them as simple cuffs on his wrists.  The gloves are black with glowing blue circuitry that form a flat bottomed V on the back of his hand, and extend up the sides of his arms when worn in full protective mode.

  • Fey leather wallet: Jack's wallet is made of an unusual leather.  From it, he can always find as much cash as he needs in whatever the local currency is.  The money disappears by sunrise the next day.  If anyone else opens it, they will find it empty.  If anyone takes it, they will suffer a series of unfortunate events until it is somehow returned to Jack.  The exception being if the people who have it have the technology and magic to keep it safe, and right now the Gaming Guardians have just that, and keep it locked up and away from Jack.
Affiliations:  Jack was once a kind of demon called “Div,” but was turned human in an encounter with the Gaming Guardians and has alienated his family.  Until his capture by the GG, he was known to associate with Carmine, a villain who has given the Gaming Guardians a lot of trouble.  He is now a recruit with the GG and going through rehab.

Abilities/skills (mundane): Originally, Jack had little interest in human things and had a lot of difficulty with even simple technology.  However, he ended up experiencing a childhood, being raised as human, and now can do the sorts of things the average college graduate can be expected to know (ie drive, use computers, text, use a credit card).

Languages: Jack is fluent in English, Persian (Farsi), Arabic, French and Spanish.  He also speaks a certain dialect of Infernal that is unique to the Div, but allows him to understand bits and pieces of many demonic languages.  The Div's particular dialect is physically painful for mortals to speak in or listen to, and Jack avoids using it.

Basic weapon proficiency: Jack can use a sword or whatever other basic weapon he picks up, but he doesn't excel at it.

Ranged weapon proficiency: Jack has been practicing with a crossbow and has gotten pretty good with it.

Basic firearms proficiency: Jack has been taking firearm safety classes and mentoring with another Guardian on using various kinds.  He's most comfortable with small pistols, but really enjoys using shotguns and anything else that makes a bigger boom.

Medical training: When in college, Jack started studying for medical school.  He went through the first two years of medical school at the top of his class, but in the third year he had to start working with patients, and found he hated it. He at least has the basic training required to do first aid, and has a lot of knowledge about medicine in general.

Powers:

Fire control: Jack can create fire and control flames, from lighting a cigarette to creating a raging inferno.  He can dispel his own flames or quell a fire that he didn't start just as easily.  His own flames burn him when he produces them from nothing (an affect that is avoided when he uses his lightsuit gloves).  When controlling existing flames, the fire must have fuel to consume or it will go out, but flames he creates burn as long as he concentrates on them. He can use his powers to keep fire away from him, but has no other protection against it.  He must be able to concentrate to use this power; significant distractions (such as being injured) will cause him to lose control (which could mean that his flames go out instantly, or that they continue to rage without any direction from him, depending mostly on the GM).  If Jack loses consciousness, or if magic is dispelled, the flames he created instantly vanish but secondary fires will continue to burn.  Controlling magical fire may require a battle of wills against the controller of the magical fire. (A little vignette to demonstrate Jack's ability)

Fear: Jack can create an aura of fear or cause fear in an individual.  Those with strong wills can resist it to a certain extent.  Using this power gives him a headache which gets worse the longer he continually uses it, and which doesn't go away until after at least a few hours of rest.  More than 20 minutes of continuous use causes migraines that are so intense, he is unable to concentrate enough to use any of his powers.  Like his fire control, significant distractions will interrupt this power.

Memory Control:  Jack can make people forget things, from broad periods of time, to just little details.  Once, Jack frequently relied on this ability to make people forget they ever saw him.  He can also create false memories, but they are shadowy and always disturbing.  He has the ability to dredge up a person's memory and intensify it, though he has to know the memory exists because he can't read minds. No matter what effect he’s trying for, the changed memory always is disturbing for the person to recall, or in the case of removed memories, results in the feeling of having forgotten something horrifying.  When Jack uses this power, he gets nose bleeds, and if he tries big changes to someone's memory, there's about a 20% chance that he'll pass out, or experience worse side effects (see medical report below)

Weaknesses/disadvantages:  As noted, each of Jack's powers comes with drawbacks.  He uses them only when he feels it's absolutely necessary.  Also, his own powers cause him harm and may result in long term side effects or potentially kill him.  See medical report below.

Addictive Personality:  Jack is addicted to nicotine.  If allowed, he will have a cigarette in his hands at every waking moment. If he hasn’t been able to smoke for an hour, he begins to feel anxious and irritable.  If he’s without a cigarette for several hours, he starts to take that irritability out on others, and has trouble concentrating.

He has an addictive personality in general, and easily picks up new habits.  Right now, he's hooked on caffeine and in the past, he has had problems with an addiction to healing.

Personality:  Jack’s personality has changed dramatically since he spent twenty years living as a human in another system.  He is much more outgoing, flirtatious under the right circumstances, and generally appears to be nice.  He is, however, brutally honest, and will say unpleasant things in the name of being truthful.  He has no problem being cruel to people he doesn’t like or people he thinks aren’t worth any consideration.

History: Jack was once a powerful demon, the right hand man of the leader of the Div.  One of his duties was fetching his wayward brother, Scrae, whenever he managed to escape from Hell.  While on such an errand, he managed to find his way to Primary, where Scrae had inadvertently escaped.  He was wary of the Gaming Guardians, and unsuccessful in trying to trick Scrae into coming home.

When Scrae died, Jack became obsessed with trying to get his body back, and once  he found out who killed Scrae, with getting revenge.  A series of unfortunate encounters led to him being changed into a human.
Still intent on revenge, he went against his father's orders to just stay home, and started system hopping in order to carry out a complicated plan for vengeance.  He resurrected the villain Carmine and gave the Guardians a little trouble.  Then the pair just seemed to vanish, deciding to lie low, partially because Jack was suffering from lung cancer.

He was eventually captured and brought to the Outpost where Sukh Ra convinced him to give up on his ideas of revenge and ally himself with the Gaming Guardians.  Jack became a recruit and went through the Rehab program, which he has graduated from.

Recently, Jack was regressed to a three year old child, and sent to another system that experienced twenty years in the span of three hours real time.  Jack had no memories of his life prior and was raised as a human, alongside his friend, Tiernan.  This experience helped Jack to really understand how to be human and changed his perspective greatly.  He is no longer interested in being a demon.  He considers Tiernan his brother, and changed his last name to Barimen (he was adopted by a copy of Brand Barimen that Tiernan unconsciously created in the system).

Jack is generally a model Guardian.  He excels in his classes, follows orders, and usually stays out of trouble.  Sometime after his experience growing up as human, Jack found that his old evil impulses had waned, and it has been confirmed that he no longer registers as evil.

Re: Jack - Standard Mission Gear
« Reply #2 on: November 19, 2010, 08:30:35 pm »

Jack generally carries the same equipment to his missions, with slight differences depending on the setting.  As he gains more experience, he may add things to his standard gear or may add/remove things depending on the mission.  GMs can be expected to be informed if something will vary from his standard gear listed below.

Modern systems:
Clothing: Jack will wear his normal street clothes, including his leather jacket, lightsuit gloves, and steel-toe boots, and keep his wings hidden with his CM.  He wears a bullet proof vest under his clothes.
Weapons: A pistol and hunting knife will be concealed under his jacket.  If carrying weapons openly is alright, he will also bring a shotgun.
Equipment: Jack will always bring several jaunt beacons, a zippo lighter, a first aid kit, and a flashlight.  Most will be in a backpack (though jaunt beacons and lighters are in his pockets).

Fantasy/Medieval systems
Clothing: Jack prefers the classic rogue look, with black leather armor.  Wings will be kept hidden if necessary.  He'll use his CM to try to disguise his jacket and gloves.
Weapons: His hunting knife is still concealed on his person, but he also will carry a long sword and a crossbow.
Equipment: Almost the same as in the modern system, though he may carry matches if bringing anything modern will upset the system balance.  Also, either sun sticks or torches instead of the flashlight (depending on the system).

Subject: Medical Report: Jack Ketch
To: Jenny Wren
CC: Personnel files (security access GSC and above)
Attachment: Test and Lab results

Jack Ketch was ordered to report to Medical for tests due to the fact that he believes his powers are harmful to him.  Attached is a detailed report of the results of Jack Ketch’s medical tests and labs.  Many tests gave us nothing of much use for identifying the problem-though they served as his physical check up for this quarter.  In general, Jack is healthier than he has been since he arrived at the Outpost.  His cancer is in complete remission, his basic vitals are good, and his psych reports are positive.  With normal testing, the only health concern that comes up is high blood pressure.  Testing his powers specifically does yield problems.

We were already aware that without protection, Jack burned himself when he summoned fire. The fire originates physically from his hands, and the burns can be prevented with the lightsuit gloves he acquired from a TRON system. However, tests also show that as he summons flames, his heart rate, blood pressure, and core temperature rises. The more flames he summons and the longer he sustains them, the greater the effect.

Jack indicated that he experienced headaches when he used his fear aura. These could become full migraines after extended use, resulting in nausea, vertigo, and black spots in his vision. Testing shows that use of the aura results in a construction of his blood vessels.  This serves to also increase his blood pressure.

Jack also indicated that he had experienced nose bleeds and weakness when using his memory control abilities.  Testing of this ability was severely limited, as this power causes psychological damage to the subjects.  Sentient subjects could not be used.  What testing could be performed revealed that the use of this power caused a dramatic increase in blood pressure and hemorrhaging.

While the effects of using his powers seem to wear off not long after using them (with the exception of the headaches, which Jack reports can linger for days), it would be reasonable to assume that eventually they will have lasting effects, such as hypertension.

Potentially, excessive use of his powers could go so far as to cause stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure and arterial aneurysm.

((The following letter was delivered to Val to then be shared with Lana and Vincent))

I, Jack Barimen (formally Jack Ketch), acknowledge that I did attack Vincent Byron on $date in an attempt to alter his memories for my own personal benefit.  I will make no further attempt to try to excuse my actions.  What I intended and what I did was wrong and I sincerely regret my actions.  I will accept any disciplinary action ordered by Rehab, including the restrictions that have already been placed on me and any further actions deemed necessary.

I will avoid interaction with Vincent in the future whenever possible.  I don’t want to cause him anymore difficulties and have ceased all attempts at communication.  I will maintain a reasonable distance from him except when it interferes with my duties.  If he requires anything else, I would like for Lana Caruthers or Val Cesoerdo to communicate with him on my behalf, and will comply with any requests made.  I hope that the understanding will be that I am using intermediaries in and effort to prevent Vincent from feeling uncomfortable.

Moving forward, I will work with Rehab to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

Signed,

Jack Barimen

(with lines for Val and Lana to sign)
