Mercenaries? Dimensional instabilities? Mutants? Bizarre super science?

It was like someone had custom crafted a scenario wherein a certain orc would be stupidly at home.

"Yeah I have a few questions. At the time that this happened, did any other weird events occur? While I know direct comparison to my home system isn't exactly perfect, whenever strange s*** like this happens theirs always something else happening like rituals or alien tech or whatever. So did C&C detect anything else?

"Second, can we get some more information on Blueshift; their command structure, overall professionalism, current public employer for this operation, preferred arms and other intel would make it easier to pass ourselves off as members of their company."

"Blueshift does field K9 units, so converting a companion into a domesticated dog of appropriate breed is viable. A full size wolf is going to stand out, especially in the Karakum Desert." A series of images pop up on screen, showing terrain and various wildlife and domesticated animals of the region. It seems wild canids don't get much bigger than some desert foxes there.

"To clarify on the incursions, the system hasn't been played in several years, but has managed to remain active. The majority are simply a consequence of entropy. The constantly active state means detritus enters it easily and more often." The screen now shows side by side recordings of debris contacting inactive, played, and active but unplayed systems, and how each interacts differently - bouncing off the inactive system as if it were a solid object, repulsed from the played system (a 'noospheric influence' note pops up), and falling into the active but unplayed system without any resistance. Attrition points at Dathiel, "If you think you have any insights into the situation, feel free to drop by R&D and watch for anything in particular in the system."

"Our CMs can handle anything short of getting hit with a hammer. The system autoconverts. If you do not prevent that with an active conversion, it raises reality stress, raises your detection profile, and interferes with whatever powers you have. Furthermore, you will be entering an anomalous zone. Do not let the system autoconvert you. Integrate your powers with the provided conversion profile, or switch to a personal profile when it comes to combat. I'll leave that to team discretion, but I want active conversions and all of you passing as human going in."

To drive home the point, Attrition switches on her own human conversion - tall, black-haired, and pale - dressed and equipped in Blueshift uniform and gear. The screen goes blank at the same time. "Like this. Got it?"

"As for Blueshift's SOP and equipment, the details are in the briefing packets. Some will be included in the provided conversion, the quartermaster has the rest of the materials on reserve specifically for this mission." (click here)

"Anything else?"

Nightwhisper waves her hand around a bit until people are finished talking, then speaks up.

"Yo. Some time ago we were involved in an operation to this system where we dealt with a system-displaced superhuman. Due to interference from the locals we kinda had to leave here in-system. Is there any reason to believe this disturbance is connected to that? Like, leaving out-of-system natives in may have caused this dimensional swiss cheese effect?"

Nightwhisper considers the dossier, paging through it briefly.

"Also, I understand the chunk of the system that got displaced got replaced with a chunk from another system that got forcibly injected, but do we know anything about the origins of the anomalous zone at all? Same system as the super came from? Different? Is it a bunch of systems being mixed together or just two?"

"Again, the system accumulating debris is a consequence of it being constantly active. Don't fixate on this. We have nothing on the cause of the jaunt phenomena, so any baseless speculation is of questionable value here. However, on the subject of multiple CoX remnants that have wound up in the system..."

Attrition switches off the human conversion, reverting to her usual form. Images of Basiliska from the previous mission appear on screen. "At least one can be assumed to now be an SQ asset. If you encounter any SQ-affiliated supers, don't try to recruit them. If there's any that are unintegrated and uncontacted by SQ, then they're fair game."

She motions at the screen, which shows the system chunk drifting in jauntspace again. "Only a localized piece of terrain was removed from the system, and an anomalous zone was formed in a much larger area around the event. We don't know if anything was switched into its place. Again, finding the cause of the event is your starting objective here."

Shapeshifting while in combat? Worgen? Dathiel casts a cautious glance towards Dav, but it seems like whoever, or whatever Dav is, an angry Alliance isn’t one of them.

Dathiel directs his attention to the most common types of k-9 units Blueshift usually sports. Perhaps a German Shepard? While he was at it he put a list of the equipment he’s be working with. He wouldn’t want anything heavy – it is the desert after all.

With no solid answers on the dimensional stability front, Dathiel almost wishes he’d been smart enough to be in R&D. Well scouting was something he was good at. Having no more questions (at least nothing that was useful and/or repetitive). He goes through making a mental list of things to do before going on the mission.

Quickly reading through the notes, Gaddez listens to the details of Nightwhisper and Attritions conversation noting the short answer from the Dog bot.

oO(Lets see here... The side arm should be fine and so would the G3, but I'll want something else that will do the job in close... given the budget of these guys seem to have I'll go for a SPAS12; not too new and has plenty of stopping power. Odds are the field uniforms will come with body armor, which'll be nice since I don't have a working forcefield generator or cyber armor on my torso...)

Glancing over at his companions he does his best to appraise them; one was a worgen from Azeroth, and her question plainly suggested that she was a close combat specialist. The Elf had a pet wolf, which probably meant he was a naturey sort, though clearly not the wilderness area that the guardians were going to be deployed to (still, he'd probably be helpful for figuring out how extensive the problem was). Nightwhisper... she was a sneaky sort oO(should see about giving that girl a sac of grenades...).

Good times ahead.

"I'm good."

Rei was apparently napping through the entire basic overview, and yet when she opens her eyes and straightens up she seems to have not only grasped the briefing but the side conversations as well.

"Think part of City Of ended up there? Wouldn't be unlikely. Since its death I've been seeing City Of popping up in a lot of places, and you know what happens when there's a first sighting. Might have part of Atlas Park sitting in the desert, with its own share of Hellions to go with." Rei takes a moment to stretch, apparently giving little attention to her teammates but for a sly look at Nightwhisper. She shortly turns her attention to the group in general.

"Anyway. We'll be rule-abiding, but don't expect what we're facing to be. And hope we're just dealing with a low-level anomaly and not Circle of Thorns demons on a rampage."

Dav nods her head at the reply to her questions and sits out the rest of the briefing. Since she's already in human form, she tries to set her conversion device to simply maintain her current appearance, no matter what she may be wearing or become. That might not hide her axe and hammer when she wields them, but if it does so while they're holstered and conceals her armor while in-system that's all she needs.

Glancing over to Dathiel, she studies the Blood Elf for several moments to analyze his reactions to her statements. It's quickly obvious that he made the connection to her System by her words if not her appearance, but he also didn't mindlessly attack like so many of his people had done in the past. When the two lock eyes, she nods her head in a short bow and returns her attention to the briefing.

"If there's nothing else, sort out who's running the show on the ground here and now. Quartermaster has your supplies, jaunt room is indicated in briefing packets."

Attrition raises a finger, "C&C will be on the horn. I will be overseeing, but not micromanaging. Do not expect to hear from me short of" she points to the screen, which shows a youtube video of someone running towards a large industrial fan while carrying a bucket with undisclosed contents. The video stops before anything actually happens.

She motions for the team to get going, "be on your way", and exits through the side door.

With that dismissal, Dav heads back to her quarters to don her heavy leather armor and re-set the conversion matrix to cover her even if she 'wolfs out'. She then makes her way to the armory to pick up her hammer and axe, followed by a quick visit to the quartermaster for mission supplies (and a stock of pre-made totem markers).

As she walks to the Jaunt room, she wraps several bundles of four markers, each marker a different color in the bundle and distributes them in pockets around her armor, then slips the remaining ones into separate pockets by color. You would almost think she's loading up an old-style bandolier of bullets from the Wild Wild West. Once she arrives, she awaits the rest of the group before taking her place on the Jaunt pads.

With all this talk of shapeshifting – Dathiel decides to look up some desert animals. It wouldn’t hurt if he had emergency shapeshift CM protocol handy – on second thought—he shakes his head. With how likely it was to be spotted on this mission it wasn’t a good idea to shapeshift under any circumstances, even if he was a bit better combat wise as an animal. Besides it’s not like he was on this mission solo. Flip-flopping on a subject was a rarity with him.

Being dismissed Dathiel heads straight for the Quartermaster, dons the armor and grabs the standard issue equipment plus an extra canteen of water (heading to a desert and all) and a baton (the closest thing to a quarterstaff he is likely to get). He’ll then get Laika; long ago he had a CM implanted on Laika, it takes nothing at all to make her look like a German Sheppard – one of the most common dogs used by law enforcement agencies. He’ll put a collar with a name tag around Laika’s neck as well.

Sidearm checked, an extra clip or two holstered. Baton in hand. After a moment he picks up the submachine gun, not because he is proficient with firearms (and thus most likely to use the Baton or Taurus PT handgun) but because it was standard issue, and blending in was a high priority.

Before taking his place on the jauntpad, looking like a normal red headed – green eyed human guy in Blueshift gear, he’ll take a moment to explain the mission to Laika, and stress that acting like a boring dog was probably the best route to go until further notice. Since he can’t shapeshift he’ll be relying on Laika a lot more than usual, and also their bond may or may not be affected – and above all else to be cautious. He’ll be sharing details about the SQ and the mission all the way up until ‘go’ time.

For gaddez, the trip to the Armory is equal parts pleasant socializing with people who have an appreciation for firepower and buisness as he goes about kitting himself out with appropriate gear. Within half an hour he has been fitted with body armor in blue shift's colors, and he has been given a pistol with 3 spare clips, A G3 with telescopic sight and 2 clips, and lastly a SPAS12 with flashlight attachment with enough slugs for 3 reloads.

Before he heads to the platform, Gaddez arranges for a satchel of his own grenades to be supplied to Nightwhisper; the sneaky cat would become much more dangerous with them at her disposal. Assuming she takes it, Nightwhisper will find that the bag contains 3 flash bangs, 4 smoke, 3 tear gas and 2 frag grenades.

After everyone leaves, Rei pauses only to ask Attrition how her carp are doing and whether or not they've devoured the moonbase yet. She also seems amused at how Attrition's human form looks like she could be one of Rei's cousins.

Then, without fanfare, she's off to the Armory.

Rei seems to have a good idea of what she wants, as she arrives requesting some spare magazines for her AA-12 auto-shotgun, specifically an extra mag of slugs and an extra mag of micro-grenade rounds. Once those are handed over she suits up in the usual Blueshift kit with appropriate sidearm. She cuts a very paramilitary figure in the fatigues and armor vest, although she adds a keffiyeh around her neck and seems to insist on rolling up the sleeves as high as they go, incidentally showing off a rather nice tattoo of a red-scaled Chinese dragon. Goggles are left loose but present in the event of dust, and she tosses in a bottle of strong sunscreen into her pack along with the go-to first-aid and desert survival gear.

Despite her reputation as a demigod of thrown weaponry she actually does not take her usual array of throwing knives nor does she take grenades, instead only taking along a particularly axe-like multi-function survival tool.

Nightwhisper nods and takes in the information, especially smiling wryly at the 'don't try to recruit integrated systemites' bit. If it were up to her, they'd not be dragging any more strays home, but usually that was beyond her decision.

Standing up and exiting the briefing room, NW finds a sack of grenades requisitioned for her at the armory, and accepts the satchel. Other than that she just picks up her regular gear - handgun (or Blueshift equivalent), daggers, lockpicks and general thief kit, lightweight body armor. Flicking her CM after studying the dossier, the cat-lady changes into a tall, dark-haired human with her hair set in a severe knot and a scar marring her cheek. She naturally also makes sure her outfit matches the Blueshift one.

As such she wanders into the briefing room to wait.

Jaunt Room

The team is leaving from one of the larger jaunt rooms attached to the motor pool, there's two technicians present to see the team off, and also, on a larger platform, a vehicle for the team. There's the smell of diesel in the air, although the room is well ventilated.

"It's not the latest model," one of the greenshirts explains, "but it'll do right by you. At least it has air conditioning and and we loaded in some instruments that should help you track down the source of the disturbance once you arrive." The vehicle looks old but fairly well kept, with quite a bit of ground clearance and a new set of tires. "Check it out, portal gears so the axles and transmissions are higher up than the wheel hubs, and the whole thing has a flexible frame to really crank up the vertical movement range on the tires. Three feet high boulders? No problem for this baby." He pats one of the tires. "They make them with cockpit-adjustable tire pressure these days too but it'd look a little odd to be driving around with the very latest model and you probably won't need that anyway."

The technician at the console rolls his eyes and cuts in. "You done geeking out yet?" He turns to the team. "Our aim is going to be a little loose with the disturbance, so we loaded in extra water and rations too. And a couple extra cans of diesel. The radio set should let you listen in on some of the 'official' local communications and the GPS should tell you where you landed."

Unless there's anything more to be said, the team is sent off to the system. The trip is somewhat uneventful, although insertion at the end feels a lot more uncomfortable than usual. For a brief moment, there's a feeling of ice water filling everyone's bones, but it vanishes as quickly as it came.

The Desert

The team finds itself surrounded by dunes, with no direct line of sight on anything of note. It is very hot. A check of the GPS would reveal that the team is roughly 20km north of Ashgabat, the capital, and, fortunately, within Blueshift's assigned patrol area. The more esoteric instrumentation aboard your trucks seems certain that you are already within the anomalous zone (although not very far) and that the source of the disturbance is likely to be found in a north-eastish direction, although, by the strength of the readings, quite a distance away.
