Sixty seconds isn't a long time to be doing anything, much less react to the positively hilarious (to Braelyn) manner in which Hugo had disabled Varaka. As such, the only acknowledgement he can afford to give the Mad Doctor is to blow a kiss to him. More might have followed were his time a little more free. Alas, it was not, and so he at least spared Hugo the embarrassment of the pet name that had been on the tip of his tongue: Hugo-Bear.

Seconds ticked by. All the while he knew his beloved was somehow not with the others for reasons that he couldn't immediately discern. Clark was with him, of that he was certain. As a result, the temptation to turn around was so great that Braelyn ended up wasting another few precious seconds agonizing over it. With an audible groan of regret, Braelyn peels his eyes away from the crowd and turns towards the exit named 'control room'.

"Well. I hope that the labels in this place are accurate..." Without bothering to see if anyone was accompanying him, Braelyn takes off in a run for his destination. His hope is to get there before any locks might be engaged, but if they are he has another Ethereal Jaunt spell in mind. Being a cleric was so damn convenient at times. oO(Now let's just hope I stop this in time. Whatever is happening with Rath, I...)

Paradox is the price eventually paid by all Willworkers of the World of Darkness System.  It's a measure of reality's annoyance at the individual that is bending or outright breaking her rules.  In the case of Dr. Easton, he has gotten increasingly rough with many of this reality's rules and the buildup of Paradox in his own personal pattern is starting to be felt.  His eyes and his arm are past Paradox scars, fairly significant ones.  What was happening now was more like a "Paradox bruise", but it was still having an effect.

"MR. KEATON!  You call this a LABORATORY?!?  Your ineptitude is outweighed only by your DERIVATIVE MACHINATIONS.  There is nothing... NOTHING original about your plans, you simply stand upon the shoulders of genius FAR GREATER THAN YOURSELF!"

Hugo felt it, the rush of a coming scientific clash... to the victor went the spoils, such as this flawed yet intricate facility.  Oh what he could do with such a facility, the research he could perform... the IMPROVEMENTS he could make!  He might even be able to perfect the backwards theories, or RETASK them, YES!

Malloy is suspiciously silent through Doctor Easton’s rant, denying the mad doctor the hoped for scientific clash. Clark was notoriously bullheaded- and for him not to respond to Hugo in any manner hints at something wrong in the make-up of things.

From outside of the control room nothing looks amiss other than Malloy’s stillness. Braelyn and Hugo will pass a ladder and a sealed off hatch before coming up to the control room proper, and see why Malloy has been silent. The man has a screwdriver in the back of his skull. Most of the blood was on the floor, Malloy had his back to the entrance of the room and was focusing on the machine.

The control room is small, at most it will fit 4 people with three of them standing. The control panel – although it has no blood on it, it has been destroyed. The metal facing has been removed (though it is still intact) and most of the wires have been severed. More than that a strange residue coats some of the wires, and as you watch - it strips and eats away at whatever it is touching.

Cassie heads back out of the main lab room, and back towards Clark and Rath with a concerned look on her face. Agrippa finds the nearest piece of equipment and starts studying it trying to gather information quickly.

The large red countdown displays 30 seconds left in the countdown.

The first thing that Braelyn does upon seeing the corpse is instinctively cast Gentle Repose on it. He didn't have to look long to know that the man was dead, after all there was a screwdriver lodged in his skull. Even without that, as a cleric for so many years the blond-haired man had a knack for telling the difference between a live man and a dead one. If only he could have done that from a distance he might have actually felt able to turn around to check on Rath.

That he didn't immediately remove the screwdriver or attempt to raise dead was a testament to his perceptive abilities, or so he told himself as he cast a critical eye on the corpse. There was no telling whether or not this man was even possible for him to bring back to life; some Systemites just weren't compatible with that. He needed to know more about Malloy before he could even attempt such a spell and before that could even be considered there was something slightly more pressing at hand.

The machine. "Malloy here is preserved for the time being, so...no need to worry about his pretty little corpse going past the point of no return."  With that countdown ticking away, Braelyn's words come out in a hurried tumble. He might be hard to understand,"So. About this machine? Any of you sciency types know how to turn it off or at least stall it?" He eyes the control panel and suspects that not even their vaunted knowledge could do much at this point. There was just no overcoming such wanton destruction.

To have such a challenge wasted on nothing more than the biomass remains of a mediocre mad scientist... that was the true crime in Hugo's mind.

"Assuming that Keaton is as conventional as he always was?  I am thinking that a simple reversal of electron flow and polarities will suffice."  ARTURo will run up, a panel sliding open to present a series of energy coils and a particle wave state distributor.  "Likely we will find something as pedestrian as a timing circuit linked to a staged capacitor relay... A classic blunder!"

His grin broadening, Dr. Easton spreads a magneto-conductive epoxy onto an undamaged side panel close to the existing conduits.

"If this were a design of MINE, there would be no such mistakes.  The secret is to perform the various command functions and activation stages in isolated portions of the facility, triggered by hardline command cables which sever once confirmation completes."  The coils are attached in a radial pattern that almost looks alchemical, linking back to the central distributor.  "The key is to have the cancellation process completely separate than activation!  This is what separates the REAL geniuses from those that just spar wits with fashion plate espionage enforcers!"

Triggering the activation, Hugo can't help but begin to cackle.  The flow of electrons through the equipment should weaken, then slow, then eventually reverse.  Considering the damage to the panel, the electrical energy will get routed and stored in the coils, crackling with whatever is able to be taken before the entire command and control process fails and shuts down.

Of course, between Hugo's slip into grandstanding and the necessity of the calculations to make this work... the timer should flicker out when it reaches "01".

((Forces 2/Entropy 1 - Difficulty Low - 1 Willpower spent for an automatic success step (represented by the mad scientist cackling) - Basic success means the activation process is shorted out and ends.  The higher the success margin, the more is shut down and the harder it will be to reactivate without a console rebuild.  Paradox chance is dependent on on how likely the phrase "polarity reversal" is taken seriously by local technobabble.  Critical fail is prevented by the willpower spend; 6 Willpower left.))

Braelyn’s spell settles into the corpse and as he looks around he’ll notice that the corrosive substance seems to be gaining speed, cleanly severing most things it touches, a charred hole through circuitry and wires forms in its wake. Braelyn may have walked out then and there, but something about the substance catches his attention, a faint echo of necrotic undead energy. If it’s an ingredient in the substance perhaps ectoplasm? No way to know for sure without hindering Hugo’s repair efforts and examining closely.

Maniacal scientific smack-downs aside, Hugo works with all the legendary analytical and precise swiftness one comes to expect from a GG R&D genius. As he is working he’ll see the work of five different scientists melding together to make a work of circuitry and art – though whether he’ll admit it or not is another story. His familiarity of Keaton’s work makes the task before him relatively simplistic.

The will worker mage cackles as the electrons and electrical energy seem to bend to his will. The counter stops right on the one, a single second stands before the full activation of the machine. It’s true that Hugo’s distributer coils work flawlessly in storing excess electrical energy, what he could not have known is that a similar cancelation system already exists elsewhere in the machine, the energy drains quickly and the process is halted successfully.

However, even though Hugo stops the countdown, (and makes it even harder to reactivate later…) he is attempting to slam on the brakes of the trans-dimensional equivalent of a runaway train; the design of the machine allows for dimensional momentum to be a factor, and this momentum that has been building for a while – even before the mad doctor and Braelyn arrived at the facility.

Braelyn and Hugo – being in the control room with a corpse suffer the least from the backlash as the entire machine and facility suddenly ‘stops’, sadly everyone in the facility does not stay in tandem with the facility. The ground feels like it is ripped out from underneath you and both of you go flying into the right wall, the corpse also smacks into the wall and all three bodies fall into a heap on the floor.

Varaka is the most stable person in the room, the hardened polymer has glued him to the floor, and he suffers from the most epic case of whiplash ever invented. Flying objects bounce harmlessly against the polymer coating him from the neck down.

Naomi Rice, Agrippa Lawrender, and Icarus all fly through the air in the main lab and crash into the glass wall in the center of the room with a sickening thud, the bounce away from the glass and land awkwardly on tools, and desks and Icarus even gets hit by one of the flying chairs.

No one is in a position to see what has happened to Rath, Cassandra, and Clark yet. Also missing are Clark’s wife and the siblings from earlier.

((OOC: It may not be entirely clear from the post but Hugo scored a high on the Success count. The machine will be very hard to get up and running again.))

If someone were to ask him, Braelyn would have happily admitted that he hadn't a clue as to what Hugo was describing in his science-fueled explanation. Such concepts were above him though he did at least grasp the fact that the Mad Doctor knew what he was doing and had a plan to deal with it. He nods, "Good, good, good...you deal with that, Dr. Easton while I..." He trails off, eyes drawn to a substance that appeared to be ectoplasm.

"...that's curious." He bends down close to examine it though maintains some distance for safety's sake. "Undead energy...here. I didn't detect any earlier, but..." Braelyn frowns, thinking back. It was entirely possible he had been too distracted earlier to take note of such a thing. He would have to ask Rath once he got back down to the main area. If anyone had caught on to whatever was that energy's source, it was likely his husband. For how, however...

...and then, Braelyn is flying across the room! His stomach gives a terrible lurch as forces beyond his control pull him from his feet and sends him flying into the far wall. The wind is summarily knocked from his lungs from the force of the impact and soon he finds himself in a heap with Hugo and a screwdriver-impaled corpse. Instinctively, he puts a hand on the doctor and manages to blurt out despite the fact that the room was spinning, "...you...you ok?"

He didn't bother asking the corpse.

When the world felt like it was done making him want to throw up, he'll do his best to extricate himself from the tangle of bodies. Should Hugo need help he'll provide some, otherwise Braelyn rises to his feet. He rubs at his head, "Well. You stopped it at least. Well done, really." He sound sincere, though shaky. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a husband to track down. I'll attend to the body when I get back...in the meantime, um...maybe you can make the world stop spinning." He'll meander out of the control room in search of Rath.

Hugo looks up, his glasses knocked askew and his void black eyes clearly visible to Braelyn for at least a few moments.  Sure, Hugo had a reputation as one of the not-so-warm-and-fuzzy Guardians, but those eyes were a mark of true evil.  If there is anything in Braelyn that responds to a mark left by a dark entity such as Faustus, he will sense the resonance left within those scars that refused to fully heal.

Soon enough, however, the glasses are put back into place as Hugo struggles up... he wasn't an old man yet, still in his late 30s.  It's just easy to forget that given how he often talks.  "I have not experienced a 7th dimensional vector shift like that since I hunted voidmanta on the edge of venusian space..."

Stumbling out of the control room, Doctor Easton approaches the very fortunate prisoner.  "You... you have answers that I will require.  Now I do suggest that you summon within you all of your efforts at self preservation and focus them upon your elocution.  For each question you answer like a brain damaged troglodyte, that is an unsanctioned experiment you will become the subject of within my PERSONAL laboratories."

ARTURo will immediately sit right in front of the troll it's head quirked to the side as a ripple of electrical arcing plays across his muzzle.  "Master has promised me new weapons when we return home.  They will require calibration."

Hugo just lets a slight smile play on his lips as he pats his robotic familiar on the head.  "Now... let us start with why that idiot Mr. Keaton was impaled through the cranium with a type 9 screwdriver, and who else was in here with you two."

The facility is not done with lurching movements, After Braelyn makes his way to the entrance he has just enough time to note that Rath seems to be bleeding and pushed awkwardly halfway up the wall. Cassie and Clark are right below him, Clark is fumbling around in a first aid kit for a moment before pulling out a long needle.

“...It’s the dimensional equivalent of cutting his arm off…” are the only panicked words from Clark that Braelyn can make out when the floor heaves out from under foot again. As Braelyn recovers from the second shake up he’ll see Clark Pierce stick the needle into Rath’s leg.

Hugo would be well aware that the latest lurch is a dimensional aftershock of horrendous proportions, likely the result of the facility’s existence flooding into to a previously evacuated gap in whatever dimensional physics the machine used. This wasn’t good, it meant that there was a high likelihood that the world, the area of jauntspace they had been in previously may not be the one outside the facility now. At least the facility hadn’t collided with anything.

Varaka is once again rooted in place during the aftershock and after his head bobs back and forth for a bit he just yells.
“Fine whatever you want you damned hippie!” after a brief moment when the room stops spinning for the troll he focuses his eyes on Doctor Easton. “No meat crawled in the control room except Keaton until you mooks showed yer faces. What’s this about a screwdriver?” The troll does not understand the word ‘cranium‘  it seems. Varaka is thoroughly intimidated.

Braelyn had caught sight of Hugo's fathomless void pits for the brief moments they were visible to him. Despite his own fairly neutral nature, the sheer depth of their evil had sent a shiver down his spine. That was the man that his beloved sister worked for? Such concentrated darkness where eyes should have been...and yet the rest of him... oO(Focus, Braelyn!) He chides himself, returning his thoughts to the present.

The first shake had been annoying and disorienting, but manageable. This second one seemed infinitely worse, though perhaps later on he might have admitted that had less to do with the movements and everything to do with Rath seemingly at Clark's mercy. "Clark!!!" Braelyn yells as he struggles to his feet, his voice strained with a mixture of panic and anger. He stumbles forward, blue eyes fixed unerringly on a man he most certainly loathed, "If you value your hide, I'd suggest you take that needle out of Rath's leg..." The look in his eyes left no doubt that if he felt he had to, he would harm Clark. Or worse.

As he crosses the distance between himself and trio that included his husband, Braelyn mentally goes over the spells he could possibly cast then and there. If someone asked him, he would have been hard pressed to say that he hadn't considered one of his more lethal spells as opposed to one of a slightly kinder nature. One look at Rath's state was enough to guide him in the end; the moment he is within touch distance from Rath he extends his right hand to the bloodied body and applies a casting of Cure Critical Wounds. oO(Thank Sashenka he isn't your standard type of undead or this wouldn't even work...)

The needle remains a concern so with his free hand, Braelyn will awkwardly try to grab at it...though at this point he's half-expecting the contents to have already been injected into Rath. Well, whatever that needle did he's relatively certain he had a spell to contend with it. And if not, well, he just couldn't bring himself to think about that just then.

Hugo frowns.  "Hippie... that is a word you will pay dearly for."  Maybe it was the glasses that was causing the mistaken assumption by the troll.  Well, it would be a good idea to remove those glasses then, wouldn't it?  Carefully they are taken off, and hung from a breast pocket on the jacket.

"Keaten has had his mental faculties perforated at the back of his skull, a hard stabbing into his weak grey matter through the crunchy exterior of his skull.  With this in mind... who were your partners in this venture?  Who worked closest with Keaton?"

It was getting so Hugo was wishing for a slow moving laser... a vat of acid... perhaps a waste disposal chamber that would count down to vaporization...

If anyone knew how pissed off Braelyn could get - it was Clark, but that doesn’t stop him from finishing injecting the rest of the needles’ contents into Rath.

“It’s Hydrmorphone, it’s the strongest painkiller we have. He is in the process of being dimensionally amputated. What the hell happened back there?” Clark will abandon the needle and the first aid kit to Braelyn so the cleric can see and verify things for himself, and he slowly and cautiously backs away from Rath as Cure Critical Wounds mends most open and visible wounds that Braelyn can see.

Cassandra looks between the two men nervously before trying to put herself in between them.
“The first aid kit came from me, I assure you its painkiller’s and that’s all.”

Looking over the wounds that closed Braelyn will notice he’s seen an effect like this before – the wounds are going to reopen on their own, now that the machine has been stopped though it looks like it’ll take a while for Rath to get as bad as he was before.

Varaka pales as Hugo reveals the evil resonance eyeballs. The large troll seems not to understand Hugo’s question at first, then summoning up his own inner will the troll’s upper lip curls back into a snarl.

“Malloy, Clark, Jessica, Naomi, Vincent, and Diana. Them’s the bosses.” The troll takes great care to enunciate every name clearly.

Hugo's eyes narrow, pulling off his gloves and showing first his flesh hand and then his gold cybernetic one.  In and off itself there is no gesture here to suggest and incoming blow or another threat.  It's just a change, one calculated to make the troll focus on the man in front of him that was unimpressive in physique but obviously scarred from many misadventures.

"Excellent, you are beginning to follow the rules of this interaction.  Now... I will offer you a number of questions.  The admission of ignorance will incur no penalty.  The insistence of deceit will be taken as a sign of stupidity, and thus requiring the promised accumulation of time discovering answers in the realm of experimental and theoretical Science.  However... if you manage to give me truthful answers without any show of ignorance to all... then you will find yourself rewarded."

Waiting for the troll to show his understanding, Hugo will then begin.

"Question 1.  Why is it that you were brought to perform henchman duties, and obviously deter anyone that made it past that door?"

"Question 2.  What is it that Malloy Keaton was planning on doing after complete the ignition sequence of this facility?"

"Question 3.  Where were you found and how did you come into the employ of these individuals?"

Varaka will be given time to explain, but any slip into vulgarities or slurred speaking will result in an arc of electrical energy between Hugo's mechanical fingers and an increasing frown of disappointment.  If you did not properly educate minions, then they became sloppy and inefficient... Von Hexinshtein had taught Hugo at least that much.

Braelyn doesn't answer the question until he's confirmed what both Clark and Cassandra were telling him. Once he's satisfied (with that, at least), he turns to Clark and replies, "Someone thought that Malloy's skull could use a modification. He's now sporting a lovely screwdriver out the back of it. It might have made for a lovely addition, if you're into that sort of thing, but sadly it just didn't go with his eyes." He doesn't sound at all put out by that. Really, as a cleric, he was quite used to death.

After a moment, he sighs heavily. "This is no good. I can heal him all I want, but these are just going to reopen." He drums the fingers of his left hand on his cheekbone, clearly contemplating what to do. "I can keep healing him but eventually I'll run out of steam and then what? No...no...the better solution is to figure out why this is going to continue despite what Dr. Easton did to the machine..." He looks up suddenly, "Right. I forgot to mention that part. The good Doctor did something or another and now the machine is stopped, at least for now."

Checking one last time on Rath, he turns to face the other two more directly, "Cassandra, I couldn't help but notice you didn't go into detail on what the Xaviers do, or what Clark here was responsible for." He straightens, "Sorry if it sounds like I'm interrogating. Really, I'm just figuring that the more information I have on hand, the better chance I have of correcting what was done to my husband. And I think, given the fact that he wouldn't even be in this state had he not been summoned here, I'm owed at least some cooperation in that."

Varaka doesn’t understand in the slightest. Half the words coming out of the scary mook was gibberish. When Hugo starts asking his questions Varaka just hangs his head in defeat.

“I ain’t squealing on my friends.” There is the briefest moment when everything is still, then the room explodes in a flurry of activity. Every scattered paper (and there is a considerable amount of paper in the room) springs to life and flies towards Hugo and Varaka.

With Varaka they strike at the resin attempting to chip away at Varaka’s prison.

In Hugo’s case the paper seems magnetized to him, clinging to him and trying to push him back, away from Varaka.

A very upset and pissed off Naomi Rice steps forward.

“Stop picking on him!” Her voice is high, panicked and squeaky. “I brought him here because we needed help mounting equipment, Clark just kept paying Varaka to lift heavier things and other manual labor. He’s not a researcher and he’s no scientist, to question him like this is stupid, barbaric, and vile.” The last part was uttered in quiet clipped tones.

“Of course he deters anyone from entering the lab, an accident back here turns people inside out — or worse. Use your brain!” Since Hugo still has his glasses off his eyes are clearly visible and seem to make Naomi even angrier.

Icarus for his part seems content to stick close to the wall nursing his broken arm. But when he sees Naomi’s face darken even further he does decide to speak up.

“I think it’s pretty fair if we all agree that whatever potential information you can get out of Varaka dear Doctor, would only be mildly interesting compared to someone who actually worked on the project…” Icaraus looks between Varaka and Naomi. “Besides… does anyone else feel strange?”

An unnatural cold has descended on the entire facility. There is a low hum, a vibration in the air, but the machine is off. Anyone familiar with what it feels like to be deep underwater can recognize the telltale feeling of an enormous amount of pressure starting to settle in as moments tick by.

Seeing that he was no longer the target of Braelyn’s direct animosity (At least no more than usual at the moment) Clark straightens up. The news of Malloy’s death is a genuine shock for him, he stays quiet listening to Braelyn’s every word. At the news that Hugo tampered with the machine Clark’s face darkens and he rushes for the main lab – ignoring the standoff he heads straight for the control room in a panic.

“I understand the questions Braelyn,” Cassandra moves back to the first aid kid trying to put the needle and bandages away properly. “Clark was the lead designer. You should know how Clark is with dimensional manipulation.” She says this quietly looking at Rath. “I’m not sure what his wife Jessica does. Vincent Xavier is a brilliant theorist he came up with a lot of the math, his sister specialized in metal alloys, she and Naomi are pretty much responsible for those reality batteries. Those are the things powering the facility.”

“I’m so sorry Braelyn, we seem to have stepped outside fate. I always knew there was going to be chaos, I just didn’t expect falling through reality like this. If my theory is right… never mind. I just didn’t expect to be so useless.” After a moment though she looks towards Rath. “I’ll guard him. You need to help find out what’s going on and focus on stopping it.”

((OOC: Naomi is pushing Hugo away from Varaka, not inflicting any damage If Hugo persists in keeping his spot by the troll let me know and I will start rolling opposed checks))
