Not yet familiar with most of the techie things (and strangely not too surprised at the somewhat thrown-together look of the Unimog), Dav chooses to climb up on top of the truck and try to get a view of the territory from up there. She scans the entire horizon from her perch, first looking for any other beings or vehicles in the vicinity before secondly searching for an obvious high-point within sight. Once the others point out their recommended direction of travel, she'll look again for a high point between North and East where she might activate Far Sight to gain another viewpoint (moves her visual viewpoint to that location for the period of one minute or until cancelled--but not until she tells the others what she plans to do.)

(( BTW: I know the truck in the image is a Mercedes, but I like the Unimog as it's a better Jeep than the Jeep itself.))

Since nobody else has claimed the driver's seat, Rei takes it. It helps that she's also a fairly long-term resident of Primary and learns very quickly, so she's pretty familiar with how these trucks operate.

Rei weathers the jaunt trip fairly easily as well, despite how uncomfortable it is. In fact, she seems downright bored, instead checking out the console of the Unimog and looking for a radio or stereo she can turn to a rock station. Which, naturally, ends up playing something absurd like the Spongebob Squarepants theme in G-Major while they're in jauntspace.

This, naturally, doesn't faze her at all.

When they arrive, Rei offers a quick, "One sec," and hops out to inspect the vehicle and make sure everything--and everyone--arrived intact. As she climbs back into the cab, she remarks, "Right. Anomaly seems to mostly be to the northeast. Stick to the truck, don't go poking anything, and keep your eyes open."

She picks up her comm-- which, in this case, looks rather like a walkie-talkie-- and attempts to ring up C&C with a <<It's Rei, we're here and good to go. Anomaly located, will keep you updated.>>

If everyone's ready, she'll start the engine and get the vehicle moving. Northeastward, ho.

It’s 5 seconds into the mission and Dathiel already wishes he could just turn into a bird and fly rather than be stuck in a noisy smelly automobile. Rather than grumble he’ll slide into the first available passenger seat and start plotting a course through the desert towards the anomaly. Familiarizing himself with maps and the like. If there is a canyon they are at risk for driving over Dathiel wants to know about it first.

Nightwhisper is very used to jaunting by now so isn't really discomforted. She does wrinkle her nose at the vehicle, however, being a bit too noisy and smelly for her taste. As they arrive in the desert, NW climbs into the car and sits in the passenger seat next to Rei. She's okay with not having to drive, although it might cause her to be a bit bored, especially now that she has to be a human for some time.

Looking out over the landscape, NW begins speaking... to nobody in particular.

"The desert was drier than a sixty-year-old Indonesian prostitute. The sun beat down on the battered vehicle as our heroes slowly made their way northeast. Somewhere in the distance lay their goal. Who or what would they find there? Only the redoubtable Nightwhisper and her loyal sidekicks would find out. Would they succeeed? Or would they become another set of bleached bones, picked clean by vultures and hyenas?

Nobody knew yet."

Gaddez, unlike Dathiel, had no problems with the back of the truck; he'd ridden in far worse back on rifts earth. Besides, odds were the back had marginally better armor then the front so if anything decided to take a pot shot at the truck they'd be better off.

Pulling on a set of head phones, he then see's about sifting through radio traffic to see if anyone is saying anything interesting in either English or Russian, while simultaneously reading the sensors to give to Rei directions to the greatest point of disturbance.

"You keep up with the grim dark Whisper and I'm liable to prefer getting chomped on by a hyena" he says in a tone that was probably dry sarcasm. Probably. "You get that bag I left for you?"

Dav calls down through the canvas roof of the cab, "Hey guys? If you hold up a moment I'd like to try and use Far Sight to scout ahead. I can move my viewpoint to anywhere on the horizon and maybe give you a better idea of what we're getting into, if the System allows it."

Before the truck sets off towards the north-east, Dav tries to see what there's to see. Sadly, it looks like, despite perching on the truck, the vantage point is still limited by the dunes around the arrival point. To the south, she can just barely make out the very tops of buildings in the far distance. Thankfully, the air is clear just now. Towards the north-northeast, she can see what seems to be a small weather balloon of some kind. It must be flying fairly low, teetered by a cable you can't make out at this distance. Perhaps some kind of lookout for someone or something on the ground and out of Dav's view. The balloon might qualify as a high point for the shaman, in any case.

Lastly, there's a thin veil of dust being kicked up, presumably by a moving vehicle, a few hundred meters to the north, heading roughly in the direction of the weather balloon.

As the truck gets moving and crests the first dune, it becomes obvious that the dust cloud (and the vehicle causing it) are moving north-northeast on a road through the desert. The uneven terrain still obscures what, if anything, is below the teetered balloon, which seems to be about 5km from the arrival point. The particulate matter kicked up by the moving vehicle continues to lightly obscure it,  although the shape of a giant icecream cone mounted on top is very distinct.

C&C responds to Rei. << Roger that. We suggest you make up your mind on whether you will reveal that you're aware of animal sapience or not. It will be fairly credible coming from Blueshift agents, so it might be worth considering if you run into animals that speak English in the desert. >>

According to Dathiel's map, the team is heading into an utterly boring part of the desert, with no irrigated land or recorded settlements, or even particularly remarkable terrain features. Still, the map (procurred in-system) does show a main road cutting through the desert in a somewhat winding, north-easterly way. If anyone cared to check a Primary map, this road wouldn't be on it. In an (formerly) adventure-focused system like this, there's no telling who had an interest in having a questionably useful road through the desert, and when.

Turkmenistan (and its part of this desert) may be smaller than some american states, but given the state of the roads here, the team would still be looking at hours of driving if they had to cross the desert as a whole. The approximate center, and hopefully what the team is looking for, shouldn't be more than two or three hours in, though.

Gaddez settles into the back of the truck and starts trawling the radio-waves. On most channels, nothing immediately remarkable pops up, but it seems one channel seems to function essentially as a regular entertainment radio channel.

"I've gotten word that a team of mercs from Ridley's Rangers were trapped in the remains of Derweze, pinned down by a gang of big horned bastards. Maybe they were attracted to the sulfur smell from that burning gas pit? Anyhow, one of the transport choppers on loan from the NAC dropped in EntTroPol and Blueshift squads to bail them out and retake that useless crater there. Zone Radio don't name real names, but our thoughts go out to the families left behind by The Filmgoer and Hubris, who didn't make it out. Big shoutout to our pals at Blueshift for mustering some backup for Entrox' lovable corporate muscle on short notice. I'm sure they'll get a bonus for that.

In other news, and while I'm talking about Blueshift, Overwatch recommends patrols in the South Central sector to run early and fast if they smell trouble – air cover has been badly depleted there over the last two days, so don't bet on quick emergency extractions, friends! Soon as the losses are replaced, you'll hear it here first. Or, you know, in your patrol briefings.

In more positive news, the trio of super-heavy tanks spotted heading towards the oasis Mary surrendered to Enginuity Inc's security teams, I hear they were low on ammo and spare parts and willing to trade their tanks for warm meals, running water and broadband internet connections. Huh! Enginuity's engineers described the tanks as 'unneccesarily gigantic', but are confident that finding out how these things are powered, or even able to move, is going to prove enlightening. Well, good for them!

This was your friend Imbroglio with the Zone news. Keep on fighting the good fight and keep your chins up. Coming next: High Voltage from the Electrix Six. As always, stay tuned for dust storm warnings."

Following that, the music starts up, as announced. The South Central sector mentioned in the news bit is almost certainly the area the group arrived in. As the team drives on, they might notice some sort of undefinable feeling of wrongness in the air. The desert feels sick. It must suck to have been stationed here for over a week so far.

----

For the sake of expediency, I will assume Dav gets a minute or two to use the Far Sight spell. If not, just disregard the follow section.

----

Should Dav place her Far Sight spell on the weather balloon in the distance, she'll get a solid overview of the surrounding area. The air is clear, and she can see for miles. Almost directly below where the balloon is teetered however, things already get interesting. A very large helicopter appears to have crashed here, or at least had a very rough landing. It's difficult to tell, but it may have dug a furrow into the sand, which since then has been mostly smoothed out by the wind again. The wreck is somewhere between 120 and 140 feet long, and has settled unevenly onto the sand, with one side, facing towards the team, mostly sunk into the sand, and the other side, as a consequence, being tilted to face upwards, slightly. Various weapon systems are visible on this flank. Dav doesn't have the expertise to tell, but a helicopter this size in the Primary would be much too cumbersome to be an attack helicopter or gunship. Another notable detail is that this helicopter doesn't seem to have any obvious unit markings, it's painted a deep blue and has what seems to be the world's largest van mural painted on the side, some kind of clawed beast emerging from a stereotypical alchemy cauldron.

Someone seems to have erected a makeshift base fairly hastily around the crashed chopper, with large metal gratings laid out on the sand, a troop transport parked in the shadow of the wreck, and several diesel generators chugging away to provide power to a large tent and a number of automated, or remotely controlled, gun turrets set up around the perimeter. The weapons don't seem very large, most of these turrets seem to be deployed from, or disguised as, wooden transport crates.  The road is visible only about a hundred meters to the east of this position.

Far to the south, the capital of Turkmenistan is just barely visible. West and east of it, slightly less distant, are what might be clusters of tents and vehicles. Base camps perhaps? Impossible to be sure. Far to the northeast, along the road, Dav just barely makes out a hint of buildings interrupting the monotony of the desert. She'll also notice that here and there, the desert is dotted with the wreckage of vehicles, or the sand churned up, signs of battles that the wind has not entirely erased yet. Just at the edge of visibility here, towards the north-northwest, lies what appears to be a large ship wreck in the desert, with a tiny cluster of vehicles moving towards it, kicking up sand.

TL;DR; The team has the following options: Speed up a bit and make contact with the ice cream van, or try to maintain distance and just keep driving along behind it, or elsewhere.  You almost certainly have been seen in a rearview mirror though. Then there is the small outpost coming up. Attempt to ignore it and stick to the road, or seek out contact? They might try and establish radio contact anyway, if they're friendly. Or just try to avoid being contacted altogether by keeping distance and not taking the convenient North-eastern road. Your truck can handle it.

Assuming for a moment Dav was allowed to do so, she relays what she saw down to the crew, remembering she does have comm capability as part of the standard-issue supply pack. Once done, she drops to the ground and climbs into the back with Gaddez, making a quick check to see if there are any weapons mounted at the viewports around the body. (Seems she has a little experience with strange guns from some of the quests she had to complete during the course of her WoW adventures.)

((Dav's PG shakes his head as he just realized what system the group's about to run into--and pities poor Dav because while she doesn't know the system, the kind of things they're about to find will be too much like the Goblins vs the Gnomes.))

Gaddez narrows his eyes as he considers the information he heard over the radio. Obviously several merc companies were active in the area and working together to try and corral someone who was using either 1940's era theoretical weaponry or they were dealing with someone who had ultra-tech. Maybe they were dealing with an incursion from gearkrieg?

Reaching over to the wall dividing the drivers section from the back he'll knock on it to get Rei's attention. "Seems there's a radio channel chatting about what's going on and from the sounds of it, they've been butting heads with whatever came through. Sounds like whoever popped in have roughly contemporary weaponry... though they've got super heavy tanks at their disposal, which is weird since no one has deployed a tank that big since the 1940's."

"The helicopter Dav saw belongs to the NAC I think and elements of local forces are trying to hold a crater for some reason."

"In my expert opinion, this whole thing sounds like we wandered dead center into a clusterf**k, and we need to get more intel before we... is that an ice cream truck trying to go off road?"

Nightwhisper nods to Gaddez.

"Yep, got your little bag of 'nades. Hopefully won't have to use 'em".

She squints at the dust cloud ahead of them and is surprised to see the vehicle that caused it.

"I dunno about you guys, but an icecream truck? Here? Something fishy's going on... Maybe we should trail it, see where it goes?"

Being reasonably familiar with road planning in primary – the lack of settlements along the road puzzles Dathiel. A road to nowhere.

Roads don’t go to nowhere. Otherwise why have a road in the first place?

“Something we should potentially keep in mind, there is a main road cutting through the desert, in the direction we want, no recorded settlements… Sounds like someone might have hid something out this way.” looking up from the map he scans the terrain outside of the window and notices the truck a ways away.

“I agree with Gaddez, we need intel, and an ice cream truck in the middle of nowhere is just as good as any place to start looking. I mean they’ve probably already seen us. They could be SQ, but unlikely they would choose a vehicle that stands out this much. Either way it’s headed in the direction we want I vote going after it, and if it turns out to be SQ, we can always head to the outpost afterwards.” Having put in his two cents, Dathiel continues to study the map, trying to commit as much of it as he can to memory – it may come in handy later.

As she drives, Rei is drumming her fingers on the steering wheel and watching their surroundings. She seems only slightly agitated-- she probably just needs to kill something.

So when the others start talking, she nods. "Yeah, Gaddez. I heard. The superheavies surrendered, though. Can't really use that as a basis for what we might actually be fighting."

"So, ice cream truck." Rei steers slightly to fall in behind the boxy vehicle and guns the accelerator. "Let's see what's up over there, neh?"

Hot pursuit!

Rei guns it and catches up to tail the ice cream van. For its part, the truck maintains a relaxed pace, driving along the road, seemingly without a care in the world.

Getting closer, there's imagines and advertisements visible on the truck indicating that it not only offers ice cream, but also cold drinks and miscellaneous other snacks. It also has a speaker on top, possibly to play jingles.

The driver of the van extends an arm (apparently female) out the window in a gesture of greeting before the speaker on top comes to life with a feedback screech.

"Hey Blueshift. I'm Vril-ya, newly appointed morale officer for this sector. You want some ice cream or soda, I'll be setting up at forward post Cauldron-born for the next few hours to raise some spirits." She chuckles before turning off the speaker. She sounds chipper, and there seems to be a breezy quality to her voice that makes her sound slightly air headed.

Again she extends her arm out the window to motion towards the balloon both vehicles are approaching.

The ice cream truck's driver fails to mention who appointed her and in what kind of hierarchy she is a morale officer in. Apparently, she doesn't see the need to try and establish actual radio contact for a two-way communication, since in a few minutes, she'll veer off the road and presumably try and crawl her truck through about a hundred meters of sand towards the outpost Dav spotted.

Before that happens, something unusual occurs. There's a faint, very brief ripple in the air, as if from a heat distortion, and the team momentarily feels a powerful sense of being unwanted and out of place here. Then, your CMs sort of <<chime>> on your comms and the sensation abruptly ends.  At the same time, Gaddez will notice on the sensor readout that there was a sort of fluctuation within the anomalous zone somewhere northward, but without any indication of distance. The driver of the van must have felt something also, as there's a brief, sudden swerve before the van is under control again.

Within moments, C&C is on the comms. << That's unusual. We just recorded a rejection phenomenon, but your CMs are handling it now. You're blending in with the system again. Some extra power drain, but they're gonna last. >>

Almost immediately after, the music on the Zone Radio channel cuts out, to be replaced by the announcer from earlier.

"A'ight, breaking news. Those of you who've been here a few days might have recognized that familiar feeling in your gut – yep, the eggheads think we just had another major manifestation. Keep your eyes out and call it in when you see it. And if you have contact, Overwatch would like to remind everyone to resist their first instinct and keep calm. Some newcomes can be reasoned with. Don't get into a gunfight just because the zone messes with your head and theirs. You're all trained better than that. Imbroglio, out." The music resumes.

As the team's truck follows the ice cream along the road, the outpost and the crashed helicopter are becoming visible to everyone. A large tent, several diesel generators, small gun turrets deployed from crates form a perimeter on three sides, with the fourth side being the wreck. Extending beyond the perimeter for another 20 meters on all sides is metal grating laid loosely onto the ground in large squares. Probably a more stable base for the crated turrets. Might keep graboids away too. You never know. Also parked inside the perimeter is a large troop transport. Only two people are visible, both women, and details are difficult to make out, except that one is seemingly of African descent and both are wearing sunglasses.

The ice cream van is now about to turn off the road and towards the outpost. Do you follow it to try and glean some information from these people? Or just keep driving?

Dav raises her head as the 'wave' passes over her. If it weren't for her CM, you could almost swear her ears were perked and definitely pointed in a northerly direction.

However, Gaddez will notice that she has one of her totem icons out and is fingering it strangely--not as though about to drop it, but rather rubbing it like a meditation stone.

"That was... weird," she exclaims softly, more to herself than anyone, though the CM picks it up. This world's... elements... trying to... push out... Change!" She turns to Gaddez. "I'm not sure what we're going to be able to do here, but I don't think things will be as bad as they seemed at the briefing. I... have a feeling..."

Nightwhisper quietly notes that that slight CM ripple might be the sign of trouble, but there's not much she can do about it right now. She studies the Outpost a little as they arrive, poking her head out just a tiny bit from the unimog.

"Hey, maybe we should stop here and see if they know anything? And uh, try not to mention the animal sapience deal unless they bring it up first?"

She considers, than adds.

"And maybe we can get some icecream. Can we, can we, huh?"

She bats her (human) eyes at Gaddez
